The Charlatans U.K formed in 1989 in the midst of an explosion of great bands coming out of Manchester. But where the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays have long since been relegated to the "Where are they now?" file, The Charlatans U.K are making the best music of their long and storied career.
Drawing on their early mod influences along with folk, late '90s albums Tellin' Stories and Us and Only Us represented a renaissance for the groove-oriented Hammond-worshipping band and a new depth to the songwriting. Sixteen years and nine albums into their existence, Simpatico, the hugely influential group's latest, continues this trend, while fans will be pleased that dub reggae and punk-disco touches have found their way into the group's hugely danceable and tuneful sound. Charlatans concerts, sporadic though they may be in North America, are events not to be missed by Britpop fans.
